State Lawmakers Aim To Lengthen Abortion Wait Times

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-State lawmakers will conclude the 2014 legislative session one week from Thursday, and one of the key bills that could dominate deadline week deals with abortion.

HB 489 would lengthen the wait times for abortion in Alabama from 24 to 48 hours. Pro-life advocates say waiting one more day does not conflict with current federal statutes that legalized abortion.

Alabama law already requires women to receive information about abortion alternatives and possible health risks from the procedure. Rep. Ed. Henry (R-Hartselle) is sponsoring the bill.

“The decision she makes will absolutely affect her for the rest of her life,” said Rep. Henry. “It’s just that time we’re giving the mother to think about what she’s fixing to do, for some type of intervention, for somebody to come in her life and maybe speak a word to her that encourages her not to end the life of that child.”

HB 489 has already passed the House and was approved by a Senate committee earlier this month.

A related bill that would outlaw abortion in instances where the heartbeat of a fetus can be detected also passed the house, but has yet to clear the same Senate committee.

People can tell you it is ilegal to do abortions, but it”s ok for gays to marry. What’s going on with the laws

  • Wake Up

Now the taxpayers of Alabama can pay millions of dollars on legal fees fighting to support an obviously unconstitutional law. Alabamians seem to love to waste money on legal battles that they will loose (immigration laws are just the most recent example). It does not matter as long as it whips up their the Republican voter base — and, it does!

  • Seriously?

I always find it amazing that stodgy old men believe they should be making decisions about what a woman can and cannot do with her own body.

I’m with you I just posted on here those old bible thumpers need to leave us alone till they wake up to women’s rights they act like we should be barefoot and pregnant and can tell us what to do.

Abortion kills children. It should NEVER be legal to murder your child. The womb wasn’t meant to be a tomb. A unborn baby is a unique, innocent, human life that God intended to be here. God has a purpose and a plan for every life. Abortion is murder- plan and simple. God says He hates the shed of innocent blood and we will all stand before Him and give an account one day. CHOOSE LIFE!! So proud of Alabamians fighting for women, children, and families.

Leigh, you sound like a great American. And Leigh, do you realize all Americans are different? Leigh, nobody likes abortion. Would you agree that “salvation” is personal, between you and your maker? My point is: if you don’t like abortion, don’t have an abortion; if you don’t believe in gay marriage, don’t marry a gay. Don’t worry about anyone’s salvation but your own, because you to Leigh, are a sinner! STAY OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES!

Well put Leigh! For those who disagree, maybe you should try abstinence! Or maybe make your “mistake” your gift from god! Think about how many women are out there that can’t have their own child, and then you have people taking life for granted and having an abortion?!?

Amen, Leigh! Abortion will always be Murder in The Eternal Court in Heaven. Laws “may” allow murdering the unborn, But Almighty God will cast those into the Lake of Fire to be tormented day & night, forever! Amen!

They want to extend wait times and now I heard on the news today they going to pass a law that you can’t have an abortion if a heartbeat is detected. I don’t think any of this is right these self righteous bible thumpers are trying to negate roe vs wade one little piece at a time Believe me no woman just runs out and has an abortion without considering options, thinking long and hard about it and contemplating how much its going to hurt and I don’t mean just the pain of the procedure. Everlast says it all in there song “What Its Like” The most traumatic thing that happened to me when I chose to have an abortion was one of the picketers smacking me in the face with his sign and calling me ugly names
