NORMAL – In the final contest of a two-game series with Morehead State, A&M Baseball fell 9-8 to the Golden Eagles, Wednesday afternoon.
Neither team would score in the first inning until Brandon Rawe of Morehead led the second inning off with a double. Chris Robinson singled over the Bulldogs Austin Hulsey’s head to bring in Rawe for the first run of the game.
The Bulldogs began their offensive output as Ramon Nelson doubled to left center then advanced on a pass ball to third, then scored off a sacrifice fly from Dustin Dhanani. The Bulldogs kept the two out inning going when Julio Nunez singled then scored off of Andrew Utterback’s RBI single.
A spark in the fifth saw Hulsey crush a two run homer deep over the left field wall cutting into the Eagles lead 6-4.
MSU added two more runs in the top of the fifth that left the Bulldogs in a jam 8-4. With two outs on the scoreboard, Morehead had bases loaded but great defense allowed the Bulldogs to keep them from scoring.
A&M tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the Eagles at eight all.
The seventh and eighth innings saw Morehead threaten with the go ahead run but once again impressive fielding by the Bulldogs saw them shut out.
Third time was the charm as the Eagles drew blood in the ninth scoring the winning run to give the visiting team a 9-8 advantage.
A&M’s ninth inning rally came up short, as Brandon Crutcher struck out with a runner on third.
Nunez and Utterback were 4 for 5 on the day with Nunez scoring three runs and Utterback collecting a pair of runs batted in. Manny Lora was credited with striking out four Eagles.
As a team the Maroon & White posted 15 hits for their ninth occasion this season with double digit connections.
The Bulldogs will return to non-conference action with a three game series hosting Abilene Christian University this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 22.
