GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)-- Agents with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation arrested a Marshall County couple on theft charges Friday.

Sources tell WHNT News 19 Don and Janice Bradford are charged with theft and theft by deception involving pre-need funeral policies.

Sheriff's office spokesman Heath Thomas says the Bradfords were booked into the county jail Friday afternoon.

Officials say the charges stem from an internal audit that was conducted at Carr Funeral Home, where the couple worked since at least 2010.

That Guntersville-based business was bought by a larger, out-of-state company in 2010. After the purchase, company officials tell WHNT News 19 that audit revealed discrepancies.

Company leaders say the Bradfords were fired in 2011. They say after the couple was let go, further audits were completed, and those came back as they should be.

Company officials say they believe the discrepancies were an isolated incident.

After the couple was let go from the funeral home, the  company turned the case over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

Officials from that agency tell WHNT News 19 they can't comment on this case.

Company leaders couldn't say how many victims are affected. They did say all the affected policies have been honored and the company will continue to do so.

The Bradfords were released from jail after posting $10,000 bond each.   The Alabama Attorney General's office is handling the case.

  • Fellow Funeral Director

That “Guntersville Based Business” wouldn’t be Dr. Parker Griffith and his brother Dr. Thomas Griffith would it? I’ve known Don Bradford for a long time, and I just can’t see him doing this.

  • Marilynn Irvin

I do not believe Don Bradford and his wife would do something like this. In 2008 he paid (out of his own pocket) the cost of a cremation performed in Calera. He also, at his own expense, traveled there, retrieved the ashes and delivered them to family members here in north Alabama. He asked or nothing in return for this kindness.

People, Please do not bash someone for something unless you have witnessed the wrong-doing. Fingers may be pointed at innocent people.

This man is from Limestone County and has been a crook and in and out of trouble with the law his whole life. I wouldn’t trust this guy to guard a bag of garbage for me.

Yep. We are all human and subject to sin at all times. Know his past, it wouldn’t surprise me v knowing them both, I hate they are facing this. But, if found guilty they should pay.
