HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – New details, yet again, in a story that’s developed throughout the morning off Drake Avenue. The good news — everyone is okay.
Emergency crews rushed to a strange scene off Drake, just west of Leeman Ferry. A car and an SUV somehow went off the road into Pinhook Creek around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
Huntsville Police say they’ve been able to locate both drivers now. They’re both okay.
Police say the car spun off Drake Avenue, just over the creek, around 5:30 a.m. Minutes later, the SUV went off the bridge, down a snowy embankment on the other side, and into the creek.
The driver of the SUV and his wife got out safely and walked up to Drake Avenue.
The car’s driver was missing for a little more than an hour. It wasn’t clear for a time if the wreck even happened Friday morning, but it did. Police located the woman driving the car and confirmed she was not seriously hurt. They’re still trying to determine how she landed in the creek.
The eastbound lanes of Drake Avenue are open, but the westbound lanes are blocked off from Ivy Avenue to Leeman Ferry Road.
A wrecker is on the scene working to get the vehicles out of the creek.
The city has also brought in a road crew to sand the bridge to help get rid of any icy spots.
