HARTSELLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Alabama State Department of Education has given an honor to F.E. Burleson Elementary School in Hartselle, labeling it a 2014 Green Ribbon School.

The school held a special program on Monday to celebrate.

F.E. Burleson received the recognition for its approach to creating ‘green’ environments and dedication to innovative practices.

Music teacher Debbie Queen coordinates the outdoor classroom and says she’s proud of what the students have accomplished.

“The students work in the outdoor classroom in the afternoons. They spearhead recycling, they grow all kinds of vegetables, they’ll take them home. Some we made here at school, just in the afternoons,” said Queen.

Queen says Burleson is also an Energy Star School and has an energy rating of 91.

The school will be submitted for the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School Program.  National honorees will be announced in April.
