HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-Madison County Coroner Craig Whisenant has announced that he will not run for re-election.

Whisenant told WHNT News 19 that his decision is primarily based on his new role as a business owner. He took over operations at Hazel Green Funeral Home just over a year ago, creating a conflict he says can no longer continue.

“I’ve decided not to seek re-election for the office of coroner here in Madison County,” said Whisenant. “I’ve decided not to run because of my committment to the voters to not run a funeral home and be coroner, and also because I need to dedicate my time to the business and the families we serve.”

Whisenant said even the appearance that he could be steering private business his way from his public role is an issue he’ll avoid by stepping down.

Johnny Sain and David Young have both qualified to run for Madison County Coroner in June’s Republican primary.

Former coroner Bobby Berryhill said he would decide by Friday on whether or not he would make a run for his old job, but said he would run as a Democrat if he did jump in. Whisenant defeated Berryhill in the 2010 general election.
