MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s been a long time coming. The Hogan Family YMCA is finally getting to work on an outdoor aquatic center. Construction will start as soon as possible, and will likely be ready just in time for members to enjoy the summer sunshine.
“We’ve been working on this since September 2011, and we’re excited about the facility we’re going to put in,” said Steve Burcham, Chairman for the Hogan Family YMCA Board of Managers.
The outdoor swimming area costs 3/4 of a million dollars, according to Burcham. He thinks it’s worth every penny. “It’s a family-friendly facility, we’ve got swim lanes as well as splash areas,” he said. “There’s something for everybody.”
Those swim lanes will help the swimming community in Madison continue to grow. A 6-lane, 25-meter lap area is part of the construction plan. “Adjacent to that is an area that goes literally to zero, so it’s like a beach entry area,” said Burcham. “We have water features so that even the young kids can get in, splash around, have a good time with their parents close by.”
Burcham said they’re ready to start construction. You will probably start seeing something that looks like a pool going in the facility about April. “The deck, the plaster work and whatnot, about mid-May you’ll start seeing the cleanup crews go in there and we’ll have it open by Memorial Day.”
Of course, the Memorial Day deadline will only be met if the weather cooperates. As with any construction project, rain, thunderstorms or bad weather could set the YMCA back on their deadline, but hopefully not by too much.
