Snow Day Hectic for 911 Operators

ARAB, Ala. (WHNT)– There were about 80 car accidents Tuesday across Marshall County caused by the sudden snowfall.  And about 40 of the people involved in those accidents called 911.

“Mostly people calling because people slid off the road,” says 911 supervisor Jason Nix.  “We didn’t have any major accidents, but we did have quite a few fender benders and people getting stuck on the side of the road and different things like that.”

Nix says besides tornadoes, snowy weather is the most hectic at the 911 center, which is located in Arab.

“The snow is definetly one of our busiest times.  Especially when it starts mid morning like this did.  If it happens at night when everybody is at home, it’s not near as hectic.”

Nix says another problem they were faced with Tuesday was the number of calls they got that were not emergencies.

“We even have em call us sometimes and ask us about the schools.  It’s really not a good idea to call unless you have an actual on-going emergency.”
