President Obama: Marijuana Not “More Dangerous” Than Alcohol

(CBS) – President Obama waded into the controversial politics of marijuana in an interview published Sunday, saying he’s not convinced pot is “more dangerous than alcohol” and arguing it’s “important” to allow recent legalization efforts in Colorado and Washington State to proceed.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” the president told the New Yorker’s David Remnick. “I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”

The president even argued marijuana is less dangerous “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

Still, “It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy,” he added.

The president also said he’s troubled by racial disparities in the application of marijuana laws.

“Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he explained. “And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.”

Mr. Obama ascribed some element of hypocrisy to lawmakers who’ve stiffened penalties against pot use despite some probable experimentation of their own.

“We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing,” the president said.

Also explains why we are losing Iran,Afghanistan etc and the world leaders like Putin see no reason to take us seriously

Peter, you need to stop revising history! All that you attribute to President Obama was in progress before he took office. Considering the mess that he had given to him by eight years of President Bush it is amazing that we are not a lot worse off than we are!!!

You could be right, all of my life I have been drug tested .the military and various industries will fire you on the spot if this dope shows up in your system and this moron commander in chief promotes the use of it. Until the laws are changed, this turkey needs to stay quiet

As long as the majority of employers and the military will fire you on the spot if drugs are detected in your system the simpleton commander in chief needs to keep his mouth shut

I think what he said is logical first off many of u cant say i havent tried that and how many of u who do smoke ever had a wreck and killed someone because u were so high u couldnt see and how many drunk drivers have had a wrexk and killed someone u see it is the logic thing to do because alcohol kills people who smoke just chill get along with pretty much everyone in my opinion it is more dangerous to drink alcohol.Second i also think it is true what he said about the poor people get arrested more that is true until u live in a small city with little population u cannot say that is true i have smokked with the rich kids and the poor kids and the poor kid is the only one who mysteriously got caught they are the easier target!! And furthermore i by far dont like Obamacare and all the junk he brought forth so far but this is by far the best idea he has think it should legalize in all 50 states nothing wrong with it and it will bring huge money crisis to an end!!

  • Hey

Let’s stop wasting money on pot! Take that money wasted and actually pay our officers and the jailers a decent amount of money!

  • Hey

Or maybe actually fund the forensic lab! It takes months just to test all the meth and coke people keep getting busted with. They have shut most of the Labs down. The Labs need to be funded! They should get there money by taxing pot!

  • Hey

WHNT you should do something more like Facebook. Have a button that people can click beside a comment they like.

Why should anybody care whether or not someone else “likes” a comment? Why?

And by the way, pot should be legal. HOWEVER, that does not mean that anyone should smoke it. “LEGAL” does not equate to “RECOMMENDED”. “LEGAL” is not the same thing as “MORAL” either. If simpletons in this country would understand that “legal” does not equate to either “recommended” or “moral”, we would have a proper basis for common sense laws that preserve our freedoms. But there are always people who want to either protect us from ourselves or legislate their morality upon the rest of us.

Factually, it is very healthy for human consumption…the cannabinoids in marijuana are being reported by laboratory’s research from France and the UK maybe others how they reverse tumor growth, eliminate pain, assist with reducing arthritis torment and stimulate creative thinking without the adverse effects of loosing motor coordination as alcohol does. Generally it doesn’t cause violence as does alcohol nor does it destroy the liver or other organs. What a blessing from God since 2747BC. The marijuana seeds provide the highest level of Omega 3 of any seeds found on the planet so far, thank you God. Genesis 1:29

Since marijuana reverses tumor growth that means we can stop poisoning people with chemotherapy and radiation saving peoples life by “Do no harm” as Hippocrates wrote centuries ago for Physicians to follow from the Hippocratic Oath. Time to make the positive changes for humanity. God Bless!

Hi friends this new Yahoo would not allow me to place this short compliment to the beginning of this email, so here it is*:) happy God Bless You, one and all! Spencer for Peace…
