MoneySmart Program Teaches Tricks for Individuals and Business Owners

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) –  When it comes to saving money, sometimes you just may need a few pointers as to figuring out what’ seems to be eating up your dollars while you’re not looking.

There’s a class underway in Huntsville that’s affordable to attend and offers useful information about things like that.  It’s aptly called the “MoneySmart Program.”

It’s a 10-week program that you can get in on at any point.  Each class is designed to be fast and packed with information you can put to good use.

The teachers turn a conference room into a classroom.  Their goal is to show business owners or anyone else how to save money.

“You’re really going to understand where money is coming into your business and out of your business,” said Leah Gradl, a member of the Women’s Business Center of North Alabama.

The WBCNA, funded by the Small Business Administration, offers the course.  Bankers in the community teach the classes with a different topic each week to show students how to better manage their finances.

“If you know where your money is coming in and going out, you’re going to be able to make better decisions for your business, for your employees, for your long-term plans no matter what kind of project you’re working on,” said Gradl.

She explained the classes are designed to be fast-paced and jam-packed with valuable information.  Each session is one hour long and costs $10.

Gradl says bankers deliver information that’s current, strategic and advantageous.

“They can tell you exactly what you can do to improve your applications, to better your business practices and to solve problems in your business,” she said.

So, do the classes work?  Gradl points to Dinner by Design, a catering business in Jones Valley.  The owner attended the classes.

“She’s been in business for three years and she said that after attending, she gained a whole new perspective on the financial management of her business,” said Gradl.

The first class was January 13th, but don’t worry, you can get in on these classes any time you want.

You can ‘cherry-pick’ the topics and choose what you want to hear, ranging from time and risk management to insurance to tax planning.

There are scholarships available for low wage-earners.  Those who qualify can take the classes for as little as $5 each.
