FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – The grand opening of Walmart on Cloverdale Road has been the talk of Florence residents for months.
The store is expected to bring 300 jobs to the area. City leaders say the store is opening up other opportunities for the Shoals area, too.
"I like to think of us as an island economy. It's good when we can attract more inbound retail sales. Walmart will certain increase that," said Steve Holt, President of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce. "It will have a long term positive effect on Cloverdale Road and the investments from other small businesses that will grow all the way out on Cloverdale Road, which creates another pocket market for the Shoals area and for Florence in particular."
City leaders hope residents will embrace this new 24-hour Supercenter. City leaders say they have made it a priority to make sure residents have a smooth transition in and out of their homes when the store starts to operate.
“The city worked very closely with Walmart for traffic control and it's important, I know, to all those citizens in those subdivisions to have that traffic control," said Holt. "We are clearly a retail sales destination and we want to continue to see growth and diversify our retail as much as we possibly can and all the commercial sector."
The new store will open its doors on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 a.m.
