HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Huntsville Havoc will set aside their usual red and black jerseys to wear special pink and blue jerseys bearing the Melissa George Fund logo on February 8 for the annual “Melissa George Night” game.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

These special jerseys will be auctioned off to fans after the game. Proceeds from the night will be used to purchase a Giraffe Omnibed for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children.

Giraffe Omnibeds mimic a mother’s womb while providing easy access for patient care. The beds provide heat and humidity to help stabilize tiny babies while allowing proper developmental care.

The Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund is a special cause for the Huntsville Havoc.  Former Huntsville Channel Cats and Huntsville Tornado hockey player, Chris George, and his wife, Amy, former WHNT News 19 anchor, established the fund in memory of their daughter, Melissa.  Melissa and her twin sister, Ann Catherine, were born 14 weeks early in 2005, both of them weighing less than two pounds.

Melissa died shortly after birth, and Ann Catherine spent the first 68 days of her life in the NICU at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

The first 800 fans who bring an item for the NICU to the game – such as clothing, caps, blankets and disposable cameras – will receive a free Havoc “Melissa George Night” lunch bag.  Fans who have previously purchased a Melissa George jersey are encouraged to wear them to the game.

The 2013 “Melissa George Night” game raised more than $42,000 for Melissa’s fund. Over the past seven years, the auctions have raised more than $298,000.

In those seven years, the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund has raised more than $1,800,000 for the NICU.  Proceeds raised through Melissa’s fund are used to purchase lifesaving equipment for the NICU and to provide support for families of premature infants.
