DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) –  Two homes sustained heavy damage from fires overnight in Decatur.  At one location, four people were taken to the hospital.

The first fire started after 3 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 600 block of 7th Avenue.  Flames were coming out of the back of the home when firefighters arrived, and a person was also laying in the front yard.  In all, four people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and cuts.

The home was heavily damaged by fire.  Crews had a tough time fighting the flames because they had to call extra stations to the scene, and the hydrant they normally use was frozen, so they had to bring in water from another location.

While firefighters were at the first fire, they got a call about another house fire on Sparrow Road in Decatur.  A shed near the home caught fire, and the flames spread to the house.  Two people were in the home, but got out safely.  They were treated at the scene.

That home has heavy damage as well.  Both fires are under investigation.
