BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WHNT) – Birmingham Police say a child was shot on Christmas Eve after shots were fired into an occupied home at 3225 27th Court North.

Police say the shooting happened around 9:21 p.m. Tuesday night. Sgt. Johnny Williams says the 5-year-old girl is in critical condition.

According to family members, Tenika Debrouce underwent major surgery on her small intestines Tuesday night at Children’s of Alabama.

They say there were six other children and several adults inside the house at the time of the shooting.

“I got on the floor and was calling 911 and I was telling them what was going on, and they were asking me if anybody was hit and I said, no, not at first, then I heard her mother, Taisha crying, saying, ‘my baby hit, my baby hit,’ went back there saw my cousin laying on the floor, she was bleeding,” said Vincent Davis, the victim’s cousin .

No suspects are in custody, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777.
