HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-A severe weather threat that could impact north Alabama Saturday also happens to fall on one of the busiest shopping days of the entire year, putting area malls and shopping centers on alert.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to pack those malls and shopping centers on the final Saturday before Christmas, which could coincide with a nasty weather system expected to roll in sometime that evening. Many businesses told WHNT News 19 they were actively monitoring the weather, and had necessary precautions mapped out just in case.
“That’s what we try to do, make sure everybody knows what’s going on, when it’s going on,” said David Bier, Vice President of Operations at Monaco Pictures.
Bier told WHNT News 19 that the popular movie theater at Bridge Street Town Center expects one of its busiest days of the calendar year on Saturday, and was ready to deal with any severe weather.
“If it’s an issue with an imminent threat with the tornado warning heading our direction, we’ll actually evacuate the building…What we do is stop the movies make announcements, and let everyone know what’s going on. We have a safe evacuation area in the underground parking deck.”
Officials at Parkway Place Mall in Huntsville also said they were keeping tabs on weather developments.
“We are very aware of the weather and we’re watching that very closely,” said mall spokeswoman Jana Kuner. “We will shut the gates to the stores and move them [shoppers] to safe areas if necessary…We know we have the space to keep them safe.”
Managers at Monaco Pictures say you can stay up to date on any announcements regarding the movie theater by liking their Facebook page.
