HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The downtown Holiday Inn is closing its doors this weekend. The hotel has served as a huge asset to the Rocket City since it’s within walking distance of the VBC and Big Spring Park.

Final check out is this Sunday at noon. After that, the hotel will be empty. No more guests will walk through the door and no more reservations will be taken.

“For the last 4 or 5 weeks, our HR department has basically only been in existence to serve the opportunities for our employees to help them find assistance for work,” said Jim Larkin, the general manager. Larkin said about 75 percent of his staff has found a new place to work.

“We’ve connected to the new ownership of the hotel opening up a block away and they’re going to take a good share of our housekeeping department, a lot of other hotels are taking some of our staff.”

As for the other 25 percent, his goal is to have them placed by the time they close. “You know, nobody likes to close and nobody likes to see their job go away,” he said. “But the effort that’s been made between all the powers that be has really been a coming together of the community to give everybody as soft a landing as possible.”

Larkin said it’s the end of an era. “This is a business of people and personalities and you grow to depend on people, you grow close to people.”

But an era that has been rewarding. “It’s just been a labor of love, and it’s been a great experience for all of us.”

A liquidation company is coming into the hotel on Monday and crews will start evaluating all the assets. According to Larkin, hat will take about 2 or 3 weeks, then they will have a sale open to the public and other hotel companies.
