HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – With more than 2,500 people already participating in and watching the Rocket City Marathon this Saturday, this is shaping up to be the largest event in the city.
The marathon will require numerous officers and many road closings to keep the runners safe while they run.
The Huntsville Police Department wants to remind all citizens to obey all police officer and public safety officers that will be directing traffic at intersections along the route.
Because of the length of the route, only a few barricades will be posted.
The marathon will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Williams Ave in front of the Holiday Inn Express, travel through the downtown area, and through southeast Huntsville until it begins the return trip back north from Green Cove Road to the downtown area.
The marathon will end at 2:00 p.m. in the back parking lot of the Holiday Inn on Lowe Ave.
Motorists should try to avoid traveling along Airport Road and Governors Drive near Huntsville Hospital as much as possible during the hours of the race. Drivers should use alternate routes, such as Weatherly Road, Drake Avenue, and Bob Wallace Avenue to get to their destinations.
By the way, the route is changing next year.
