Sheffield Police Still Searching For Rape Suspect
SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) – Just more than a month ago, a nightmarish scenario played out in a Sheffield apartment complex when a woman was raped by a complete stranger.
And despite police efforts across the Shoals, no one has been brought to justice.
That’s why Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray is pleading for help from the public to capture whom-ever committed this horrific crime.
Chief Ray won’t say the rape case of a fifty year old woman at the Colbert Square Apartments in October has gone cold.
But Ray will say his investigators continue to try and generate leads on a daily basis.
“He works on it every day. It may be nothing but re-interviewing witnesses, or just physically riding the streets to see if he spots someone matching that description, talking to informants,” explained Ray.
There are also a couple of things police are looking to for help in the breaking the case.
One of those items being an artist rendering of the suspect, generated by witness statements to police.
The second key piece of evidence being DNA the suspect left at the scene.
“I’m certainly not saying we are at a standstill,” stated Chief Ray. “But, we are in a situation where we are hopefully relying on the forensic sciences to give us an answer.”
Chief Ray said he has been waiting on the DNA evidence to come back from the lab for a couple of weeks now.
Until the suspect is caught, Ray has assigned one investigator to do nothing but generate and follow-up on leads.
“This was even more violent than usual,” said Ray. “So, you certainly don’t want this to happening to someone else. You certainly don’t want this happening to a younger child. And you certainly don’t want this victim not to have some closure.”
Closure for the victim, community and a police department determined to solve it.
