BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A recent drug bust made in Baldwin County may be the largest heroin bust made this year in Alabama.
Authorities in southern Alabama arrested a man named Jose Lopez after they say they found about $2,000,000 worth of illegal drugs in his car. Lopez is accused of driving the drugs from Texas to the east coast.
The Baldwin County Drug Task Force seized 13 kilos of cocaine and three kilos of heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 10, east of Loxley last week. A K-9 alerted deputies to the drugs.
Investigators say they found the narcotics in vacuum-sealed packages floating inside the gas tank. Authorities believe Lopez is a low-level drug mule responsible for transporting narcotics to the east coast for a major drug cartel. The Baldwin County Sheriff says cartels in Mexico and the middle east are funneling their product into the U.S. at a rapid pace.
Investigators say they also confiscated $3,000 in cash and seized the Acura MDX they say Lopez was using to haul the drugs. Lopez is being held on $2,000,000 bond. If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
