FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - Franklin County Superintendent Gary Williams is speaking out about Friday’s arrest of a Vina teacher and coach.  Williams is hoping to ease parent’s minds.

Vina Elementary teacher Sonny Tibbs was arrested on Friday on accusations of having a sexual relationship with a high school student from Vina School.

“We don't condone this type of behavior and we'll take any measure to stop it and hopefully this will be the last time we will have to deal with a situation like this,” said Williams.

Back in 2010, a female teacher from Vina School allegedly had a sexual relationship with another male student. The case was later dismissed.

Superintendent Williams says he is taking action to avoid this from happening again. According to Williams, the school district will send a letter to Tibbs on Tuesday.  The letter will give Tibbs the option to resign, and Tibbs will have 15 days to respond.

Tibbs has been charged with three counts of a school employee having sexual intercourse with a students. The sheriff’s office is investing the case. If Tibbs is convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

Is this the first time educators at this school have been accused of or alleged to have had relations with a student? What is going to happen to the overall school? Kids are scared and upset. When they see this type of behavior from their teachers what should they think? I think that we all need to pray for our children and their teachers, but especially the children.
