Douglas Veterans

DOUGLAS, Ala. (WHNT)– Hundreds filled the gym at Douglas High School Friday to honor area veterans.

“I love America,” says choir director Becky Walker.  “And this program has just grown from a small little, 20 people coming the first time, to now as you see about 500 plus coming.”

The choir sang patriotic songs honoring all branches of the military.  They also paid tribute to a special teacher who died earlier this year.

“Sargent first class, Roy Bonds, he was a teacher here,” Walker says.  “And he always presented my poppies, at the poppy wreath.  There was only one time that he was not able to be here.  And that’s when he was serving with his son in Afghanistan.  He passed away this past year.  The students said we’ve got to dedicate the program to him.”

After the program, students served lunch to the veterans and their families.   They were also served breakfast beforehand.

“I’m just so excited.  It kind of gives us a hope that yes, we do live in a great country.  And they still love America.”
