EarlyWorks to Debut Patriot’s Mosaic, Gateway on Veterans Day
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Veterans Day is today, November 11. Many people are excited to see the parade, hear the bands and experience Huntsville’s wonderful display of patriotism and gratitude for our vets.
Today is also the day a new display and walkway will be unveiled at the Historic Huntsville Depot downtown.
The dedication and unveiling ceremony for the The Patriot’s Mosaic, The Gothic Guild Patriot’s Gateway and The Patriot’s Walkway will take place on Monday, November 11 at 1:30 p.m. Just head to the Historic Huntsville Depot and Museum, at 320 Church Street NW.
WHNT News 19 recently talked with Bart Williams, Executive Director of the EarlyWorks Museums, about the addition of The Patriot Gateway and the mosaic, which is in the final stages of production.
“It will arrive here just in time to be unveiled,” said Williams. “No one else will see it before that.”
Other than a little cleanup around the construction site, The Gothic Guild Patriot Gateway is ready along with educational kiosks leading to the Veterans Memorial from the Depot.
“It’s been a rush for the last five months trying to get it all done, the limestone in and cut and etched and all the pictures in for the mosaic,” said Williams. ”There are 1,260 unique pictures that are going to be on this mosaic.”
There’s a story behind each one. People in the Tennessee Valley submitted photos of veterans and made a donation to EarlyWorks.
“When we scanned a picture in, we sometimes stood there for 30 or 40 minutes talking about someone’s grandfather, their uncle or their husband or their wife, daughter, son, and it was amazing,” said Williams.
Each photo will be five inches by five inches. There will be a legend where you can find your vet on the 15 x 15 foot artwork.
Williams said the goal is for people to park at the Depot, see the mosaic and then walk through the Gateway where they can also enjoy the Veterans Memorial.
If you didn’t get a photo of your veteran on this mosaic, there could be another planned down the road. WHNT News 19 will keep you posted.
