TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) – An 18-wheeler overturned early Friday afternoon on Highway 72 in Tuscumbia.

The scene is at Dollar General, just near the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

According to Tuscumbia Police, the truck was traveling east on Highway 72 when a car pulled out in front of the truck.  Police say the truck hit the back of the car and veered off the side of the road.  When it left the roadway, the truck turned on its side, spilled its load of pipes and knocked out a utility pole.  It then came to rest in the Dollar General parking lot.

Some nearby businesses lost power.  Utility crews are on site now to repair the pole and restore service.

The car was damaged, and one person inside was injured and taken to Helen Keller Hospital by ambulance. Police say the driver of the truck refused treatment.

It’s not clear yet how many people were in the car.

Highway 72 westbound in the area is open for traffic.  The outer lane of Highway 72 east is closed for the time being, though.
