COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior defensive end Dee Ford sacked Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel on back-to-back plays to force seventh-ranked Texas A&M into a turnover on downs with 11 seconds remaining as No. 24 Auburn knocked off the Aggies 45-41 on Saturday at Kyle Field.
Tre Mason put the Tigers (6-1, 3-1) ahead with just over a minute remaining with a five-yard touchdown run. The junior running back finished with 178 yards rushing on a career-high 28 attempts for his sixth career 100-yard rushing game and third of the season.
Quarterback Nick Marshall finished the day 11-of-23 for 236 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing 20 times for 100 yards and two scores. It was his second career 100-yard rushing performance.
Sammie Coates was the leading receiver with 104 yards on five catches and a 43-yard score. Quan Bray also had a 13-yard touchdown to go with three receptions for 28 yards.
Manziel was 28-for-38 with 454 yards passing and four touchdowns to go with 48 rushing yards and one touchdown. Mike Evans led the way with 11 catches for 287 yards and four scores, the most yards ever recorded by an Auburn opponent.
Auburn picked off Manziel twice in the game and converted into 10 points. Ryan White and Ryan Smith both came up with interceptions against Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2).
The two teams combined for 1,217 yards total offense led by Auburn’s 615. The SEC’s leading rushing team tallied 379 rushing yards in the Tigers’ first-ever visit to College Station.
Auburn is in action next on Saturday when it hosts Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
