Social Security Office Offers Limited Service During Government Shutdown

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -The ‘Closed for Business’ sign has hung on the doors of many government offices 15 days. The social Security Administration is one office welcoming customers. There are a lot of people who are still not happy.¬†Two of them of WHNT NEWS 19 the Social Security Administration may as well be shutdown.

A constant stream of cars pulled into the government agency’s parking lot in Huntsville. Customers were in luck. The office was open.

Edwin Hunt visited the office to get a proof of income, but was turned away. He’s ticked with the government shutdown and those who run the government.

“We do this over and over and over.

It’s not something new. We’ve done it, as far as I know, at least five times. We have had this same shutdown,” said Hunt.

The agency’s website explains field offices are open with limited services. Customers can do a few things, like apply for benefits, request appeals, report deaths and change their citizenship status. Staff in the office will not issue new or replacement social security cards, medicare cards or issue a proof of income letter.

David Bush is one step away from finishing his business.

“I was trying to get a replacement social security card. I can’t remember ever having one ,” said Bush.

But, he has to wait on lawmakers to open all its doors.

“At this point, I’m not confident at all,” added Bush.
