HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - A group of Huntsville students, parents and teachers are in the United Kingdom to represent the United States -- for the first time ever -- in the 15th Annual International Greenpower Race.
Greenpower Team USA is using the same battery-operated home-made car they used for the qualifying race in June. But they've made lots of changes to try to bring home the title.
They shared video with WHNT NEWS 19 shot from a video camera right above the driver's head during a practice run in West Sussex, United Kingdom.
This Sunday, October 13th, it will be the real thing, and with many more cars.
"With having about 70 plus cars in the race, that's a lot more than we had even whenever we were qualifying, so it's going to be a different feel," said Greenpower Team USA Sean Webb.
He's returning to the UK with students from the Huntsville Center for Technology.
They'll run their car up to 40 miles per hour to try to blow past competitors from around the world in the big race.
WHNT NEWS 19 asked Webb, "Do you think you can win?" He answered, "We're gonna do our best to."
Webb said ever since June, the team has been busy improving their car trying to make the batteries last longer.
"We've actually ordered some brand new batteries and we've been working on cycling those."
Mike Evans is a drafting instructor at the Huntsville Center for Technology and has walked the students through this project from the beginning. He said, "It seems like the more we learn the more that we realize that we really do not know about the battery technology."
The students will start in the 32nd position in the race.
Evans says no matter what place they take in the end, they've already won.
"We're a success regardless of whether we come in first or last. The educational value that they receive, the soft skills that they receive, you can't put a price or a place on that."
The team will begin racing Sunday morning at 10 o'clock local time in West Sussex.
That's six hours ahead of us and the results will be posted immediately. You can check them by clicking HERE.
