COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A single-vehicle wreck early Sunday morning claimed the lives of two young people.

State Troopers said it happened around 1:00 a.m. on Colbert County 77, just six miles south of Muscle Shoals. According to officials, 22-year-old Stephen Wade Mitchell of Leighton was driving a 2006 Ford Focus when the vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a culvert and came to rest upside down in a small stream. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in Mitchell’s vehicle, Jesse Eugene Ayers, 19, of Cullman, was partially ejected and also was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said neither Mitchell nor Ayers was wearing a seat belt. Although the circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, Alabama State Troopers say speed was a factor.
