(CBS News/AP) – Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill Thursday adding California to a growing list of states allowing immigrants living in the country illegally to obtain driver’s licenses.
The licenses would carry a distinction on the front stating the document can be used only for driving - not as federal identification.
CBS News reports immigrant advocates have been pushing for the change. State and local officials are also touting the importance of “getting immigrants properly trained” and tested on California’s traffic rules:
“That’s what this bill is about, making the streets of this state safer,” Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said.
The bill signed also includes protections against discrimination. Brown predicted “that California’s endorsement of driver’s licenses for immigrants will mean more states will follow.”
