Fifth Grade Girl Recognized for Bravery

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A fifth grade girl is recognized for her bravery at Thursday night’s Huntsville school board meeting.

On Monday, J’Nay Bailey was walking home from Montview Elementary School with two younger girls, one in kindergarten and one in first grade. She heard gunshots. In fact, police say almost two dozen shots were fired, hitting two cars and a house. But J’Nay instinctively protected the two young girls.

J’Nay calmly explained, “All I did was grab the girl in front of me and grab the girl beside me and I put them together, grabbed my coat out of my bookbag, and put my coat over them and I put my body over them too.”

The school district presented J’Nay with a certificate for her brave actions. She credits her school training from “The Leader in Me” curriculum for helping her know what to do.
