MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) -- The government shutdown will squeeze the pocketbooks of many people, and also many small businesses. But in tough times, we come together. Even small businesses are doing all they can to give back to our military-based community.
In a time of need, the community is really showing it's true colors. Discounts at restaurants have started popping up across the Rocket City. The Marketplace Cafe is one of those generous small businesses.
The restaurant has a new special for government employees taking a hit from the shutdown. For anyone who has been furloughed, the cafe is offering a 25% discount on your next meal.
Co-owner Joe Salls told WHNT News 19 that it's just the right thing to do during tough economic times. "When we opened two years ago, it was obvious the presence of the government community," he said. "As many jobs as Redstone Arsenal brings here, it's obviously a big customer base and we just want to give back.".
Salls said this special discount will continue as long as the government shutdown lasts.
"People are going to have to get tighter with their money," he said. "We set out to make this a lean business, I'm a co-owner but I have a full time job, we cut corners every place we can and we try to employ as many people as we can so anytime something like this comes up its just good to help out."
The restaurant will give you the discount if you're a government employee affected. All they ask is that you show them your government ID.
"We decided to do this because it's a community that supports us, so we want to support them back," said Salls.
The Marketplace Cafe is located in the Interior Marketplace on Highway 431. You can check out their website here.
