Eight Dead After Church Bus Overturns on I-40 In Tennessee

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. – (CNN) – Eight people died when a church bus overturned on Interstate 40 in western Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon.
The bus is from Statesville, North Carolina. Preliminary reports indicate the bus was traveling east and had a front-tire blowout. It crossed the grass median, clipped a vehicle and struck a tractor-trailer, officials said.
There were 18 people on the bus. Six people on the bus died, along with one person in an SUV and one in the tractor-trailer, officials said.
The wreck happened about 2 p.m. about 40 miles east of Knoxville on Interstate 40, near the split with Interstate 81.
Many of the victims were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment, some by helicopter.
Hospital spokesperson Susan Wyatt said the injured were from Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina. She said the group was returning home from a day trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
