One Year Later: Friends and Family Hike for Brandon Hydrick
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s been exactly one year since the shooting death of 26-year-old Brandon Hydrick. Hydrick was fatally shot September 29th, 2012 on his way home from a bonfire with friends. Joel Moyers is charged with capital murder in connection with Hydrick’s death. Hydrick and his brother were driving near Moyers’ home and got lost. Investigators say Moyers fired at the vehicle when they pulled over. Hydrick was shot in the back and died at the scene.
One year later, friends and family of Brandon Hydrick are still recovering from the loss. Today, they hiked on Monte Sano Mountain–spending time in the place their avid outdoors man loved.
“There have been a lot of ups and downs throughout the year not just for me but for Brandon’s family, and for his friends and everyone who loved him and cared for him,” said Bronwen Murray, Hydrick’s girlfriend.
Murray is keeping the memory of him alive in the hearts of those who loved him. “I won’t lie, it’s been a tough week and the one year mark has been hard on everybody.”
On a day when people were thinking about Hydrick more than usual, she thought a gathering would be appropriate. “Brandon was an awesome guy, always the life of the party, he loved the outdoors.”
Those who loved Brandon, friends, and family, all came out to the Land Trust to celebrate nature and remember the joyful spirit of their late friend. It’s what Brandon would have wanted–he loved the outdoors. “Hiking, climbing, camping, biking, anything that was outside, so we felt that this was really approriate on a day like to today for everyone to come together, be outside and remember Brandon,” said Murray.
The weather was perfect.
The trails were lush and green.
The atmosphere of the hiking group was uplifting.
“The spirit out here was very happy, jovial, so I definitely think he is looking down on us and smiling today,” she said. Remembering their dear friend didn’t stop at the end of the trail.
“We’re headed to downtown where we’re going to have some pizza and we’re going to make a toast to Brandon.”
