Update: Pregnant Woman, Unborn Child Also Die in Wednesday’s Wreck on I-565

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police say a pregnant woman injured in Wednesday’s wreck on Interstate 565 has died of her injuries.

The wreck happened around 4 p.m. near the Mooresville Road exit, causing major traffic delays for drivers.

Marissa Baugher, 26, of Athens, died at Huntsville Hospital on Wednesday night.  Police confirm she was pregnant and her unborn child also died.

Huntsville Police say Frederick Bender, 66, of Hoover, died at the scene Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation is still preliminary, but police have requested a post-mortem blood test of Bender.  They are also trying to determine if Bender may have suffered some kind of medical problem, causing the wreck.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m. Wednesday.  Huntsville Police say Bender was driving a silver Toyota Avalon west on I-565 in the right lane.  A witness said the Avalon started coming in the left lane and swiped his vehicle, scraping its right side.  The witness said he slowed down and tried to move out of the Toyota’s way, onto the grassy median.

The witness said Bender passed his car, crossed the median and then went into the eastbound lanes of I-565.  Police say the Avalon hit an 18-wheeler’s tires, then hit a black Chevy Equinox head-on.  The 18-wheeler was in the eastbound left lane and the Chevy was beside it in the right lane, eastbound on I-565.

Bender died at the scene.  Baugher, driving the Equinox, had to be cut out of her vehicle and was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, where she and her unborn child died late Wednesday night.

All lanes of I-565 eastbound were shut down at Mooresville Road for several hours during rush hour traffic.
