HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Huntsville Housing Authority board voted unanimously just after 12:45 p.m. Wednesday to approve construction of up to 80 new housing units.

Up to 40 will be built on a previously discussed Research Park site and up to 40 others will be built on the previously discussed Winchester Road site.

Executive Director Mike Lundy says of the board, “I think that it felt that it was very comfortable in moving forward in making a determination, making a decision this afternoon.”

In a meeting held last Tuesday to discuss the project, the idea was met with opposition from many Huntsville residents.

In a brief public comments section after the vote Wednesday, Huntsville City Councilman Richard Showers voiced continued displeasure, “I’m standing here in support of public housing.  However, I represent a portion of this city that was not heard.”

But Lundy felt they had addressed those concerns, “We had two public meetings for both of the sites.  We also had a work session of about two hours to discuss this specific redevelopment initiative.”

Lundy added public comments were taken into consideration. He says the future residents of Winchester Road apartments would likely be a mix of people wanting to transfer from existing housing developments and families on a waiting list for public housing.
