GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– The Guntersville City Council voted Monday night on whether to allow an entertainment district in downtown.

Council members set up the proposal in such a way that would require a majority of council members to vote in favor of the motion.  At the meeting tonight, four council members voted yes, three voted no and one abstained from voting.  For that reason, the plan failed.

Earlier today, WHNT News 19 spoke with Mayor Leigh Dollar about the plan. She said “We are trying to come up with creative ways to increase revenue without raising taxes, because that’s the last thing we want to do.”

The proposed district would have included the downtown area around Gunter and Blount Avenues.

Some critics worried about the lack of family atmosphere.   Many people have written editorials into the local paper expressing concern over “drunks” walking around downtown.
