(WHNT) – In this segment of Leadership Perspectives, Decatur Mayor Don Kyle talks about bringing more people to the River City.

Decatur is the sixth largest city in Alabama, with about 55,000 people.

Kyle said it is important to build on something residents will like, as well as people who come to visit to learn more about Decatur.  Fishing has been a huge boost for the hospitality industry, he said.

Switching gears, Kyle addresses the topic of a city manager.  He campaigned for this, but it hasn’t become a reality.  Decatur is still run by a mayor/council form of government.  Kyle is responsible for creating the city’s $55 million budget.

He said he tries to look beyond his city’s borders when considering how to push growth.

“Our economy is based on the eastern end of the Tennessee Valley throughout north Alabama,” said Mayor Kyle. “It’s not just based on Decatur, or Madison or Huntsville. Our economy is permanently meshed together and they impact each other.”
