LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Fire destroyed a home in Limestone County early Friday morning. It was actually the second time fire crews responded to the home within a 24 hour period.
Officials on scene at 21607 Elkton Road say lightning struck a gas line Thursday, starting a small fire underneath the home. About 1:00 a.m. Friday, crews responded again to find that the home was engulfed in flames and roof had already collapsed.
According to authorities, the homeowner spent the day Thursday moving some items out of the home following the initial fire. No one was home when the second fire started.
Volunteer firefighters from Piney Chapel, Owens, and Elkmont responded and battled the fire to keep it from spreading. The state fire marshal’s office has been contacted and asked to investigate the cause.
