MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – The Madison City Board of Education hired several new administrators at its Thursday night meeting, including a new principal for Discover Middle School.

Melanie J. Barkley, formerly the principal at Mill Creek Elementary, will take over at Discovery.  She replaces Robbie Smith, who took a job in the Hartselle School System.

Barkley was assistant principal at Sparkman Middle School when she was hired at Mill Creek in 2009.  She was a secondary reading specialist for the Alabama Reading Initiative, a secondary reading specialist for Madison County Schools and a teacher and coach at Buckhorn High School.

The board also approved retired Liberty Middle School Principal Sally Bruer to serve as interim principal at Mill Creek Elementary until a permanent replacement is found.

Heather Donaldson, assistant principal at James Clemens High School, will move to Bob Jones where she will be the new assistant principal there.  Donaldson will replace Julie Finley, who left Bob Jones to take a job at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Nicole Phillips, a Harvest Elementary teacher, leaves the Madison County School system to become the assistant principal at Heritage Elementary.
