DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Here’s a marketing effort you can really sink your teeth into. It’s being summarized in two words, “Eat Decatur.” The Decatur Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is behind the effort. It’s designed to convince residents to eat at locally owned restaurants.
CVB officials say they have nothing against the chain restaurants, but every once in a while you want a taste of the local flavor.
“Whether you want that great hot dog or a fancy, gourmet, sit-down meal, there really is something for everyone in our local restaurant scene,” says Decatur CVB President Melissa Dunn. Eat Decatur is designed to get the word out about the local mom and pop kinds of places that are unique to their hometown. The CVB is relying on social media right now, such as Facebook, but plans to expand the effort to help attract visitors to the area into the local bistros and other restaurants.
“Maybe as Southerners, we are all about that shared meal, that shared time together,” Dunn says.
The campaign is the brainchild of local restauranteur Rick Brown, who says this can brighten the future for all involved. “We want to have a food expo here in Decatur that will include the local restauranteurs, the local chefs, anyone whose written a cookbook, things like that for a while weekend of activities,” Brown tells WHNT News 19.
The bottom line is next time you’re trying to decide where to eat tonight, think local.
