Mayor Tommy Battle Summons Powerful Crowd To Discuss Road Project, Send A Message To Montgomery

HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) – Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle touched on another important road announcement Monday, though this one seems particularly forward-thinking.

Battle says, “This is a project that was not on anybody’s plan.”

The project would create a new road off Countess Road that goes to Highway 72 and expands Bob Wade Lane to give easier access to Research Park and the Arsenal.

We’re talking way down the road.

Battle explains, “It’s going to be a 5-7 year process to get it funded.  After that, it’s a 10-year process to develop it and get it built.  We’re talking about riding on this road 17 years from now – 2030.”

So why hold a news conference now? Maybe it has something to do with the huge crowd Battle assembled, including state law makers, county commissioners, and even Huntsville Police officers.

It looks like a show of force at a time when the city and state disagree about road funding.  Maybe it’s supposed to teach the state a lesson.

Battle says, “We’ve got to work with the state government. And we’re not at odds with the state government, but we are showing them, these are the things we need for our community.  Part of our education process for the state government.”
