Decatur fireman Kirby Hines' crew shaved their heads in support of his fight against cancer.

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – A local non-profit that aids firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel during times of extraordinary need is hosting a 5K and 1-mile run/walk to raise funds for members of the “brotherhood” in need.

Brothers for Life will be hosting its annual 5K on August 17.  The Brothers for Life’s largest fundraiser of the year, the 5K and 1-mild run/walk helps them assist numerous firefighters and other emergency responders in their toughest times.

The organization was formed when Decatur firefighter Kirby Hines was diagnosed with brain cancer almost four years ago.  After multiple surgeries, complications, and even a stroke, friends of Hines pulled together to assist him and his family with the high costs and challenges associated with cancer.

Since then, firefighters, police officers, EMTs and their families have relied on Brothers for Life during trying times.

The Brothers for Life 5K and 1-mile run will be held on August 17 at Point Mallard Park beginning at 8:00 a.m. Pre-race packet pick-up and in person late registration can be done on Friday, August 16th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at T.C. Almon Recreation Center in Point Mallard Park.

The 5K course will have chip timing, with chips provided by River City Runners.

T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who complete early registration by July 31st!
