HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office has charged two men with murder.  The victim, Angela Annette Mikel, was shot several times.

Sheriff Mike Rainey said Mikel’s relatives reported her missing on Sunday.  They were concerned because she had not returned home the previous evening after visiting her sister. Relatives told officers  Mikel separated from her husband earlier in the week due to domestic violence issues and had filed for a protection from abuse order.

Sheriff’s deputies went to the home of Terry Lynn Mikel, at 2125 County Road 38.  He is the estranged husband, but was not home.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office received a call that Angela Mikel was found dead at a nearby vacant residence, 1995 County Road 38.  Deputies went to the home and found she had been shot to death, likely with a small-caliber weapon, Sheriff Rainey said.  Investigators found what they believe is the murder weapon.

As investigators processed the scene, they learned Terry Mikel and his stepson, Charles Christopher Burks, were seen running into a wooded area near Hanceville.

Several law enforcement agencies helped in the search and helicopter pilots found both men by using infrared radar.  They arrested both men just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Terry Mikel and Charles Burks are both charged with murder.  No bond has been set yet.

“I want to thank everyone involved in this case for their quick response which allowed for the arrest of these two suspects in such a short time,” said Sheriff Rainey.  “I want to especially thank Cullman County investigators and deputies, Hanceville Police and Alabama State Trooper helicopter pilots Tim Martin and Mike Manley for their outstanding efforts.”
