Russellville Crews Repair Bridge After Flooding

RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – As soon as the flood waters receded back into the creeks and streams, city leaders in Russellville were able to see just how much damage was caused by flash flooding after Tuesday’s storm that swept through the area.

Mayor David Grissom said the damage is not as bad as they first thought, but there was moderate damage done to the bridge on south Green Avenue.

According to Grissom, some of the rip-rap around the footings was washed away, as well as the asphalt slab that covered the concrete bridge.

Twenty-four hours after the storm Mayor Grissom said he has had a chance to evaluate the flooding around downtown and has found some contributing factors.

“We are just going to have to take a look at it and see if we can do some things to make improvements,” stated Grissom. “We had culverts in town that caused some flooding that were stopped up, and the street department did a good job in taking care of that situation.”

Mayor Grissom said the bridge on south Green Avenue has been reopened to traffic, but they still need to replace the asphalt decking in the near future.
