Man Killed in Huntsville Street Fight, 2 Charged

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Huntsville Police say two men are now charged with murder following a street fight Thursday that took a man's life.

Jamie Harris King and Thomas Wade Martin are both in custody.

The fight happened about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Police were called to the 2400 block of Sheppard Drive, just north of Medaris Road. Joseph Michael Atkinson was lying in the street, and wasn't breathing.

He was taken to Huntsville Hospital's trauma unit, where he died a short time later.

Police interviewed witnesses about what happened.  Police say Atkinson became involved in a verbal fight with Thomas Martin, and Martin confronted him. Police say Jamie King then joined in the physical altercation.  Atkinson was knocked out and the two other men left, police said.

King surrendered to police shortly after 6 a.m. Friday.  He is in the Huntsville/Madison County Jail, charged with murder.

Thomas Martin is also in custody.  Police arrested him later Friday morning and charged him a few hours later.
