DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Point Mallard Park in Decatur opened in 1970 with the nation's first wave pool.

The idea for the park came after Decatur Mayor Gilmer Blackburn saw enclosed "wave-making" pools in Germany and thought the idea could be a tourist attraction in the U.S.

Today, Point Mallard Park features a golf course, campgrounds, ice complex, tennis center and athletic complex. The park also hosts festivals throughout the year.
