HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Kids to Love kicked off its annual Pack the Backpacks Campaign today, with the mission to give foster children the supplies they need to start a successful school year.
Dozens of volunteers lined the Kids to Love Warehouse Monday to Pack the Backpacks for foster children.
“Today kicks off our annual school supply volunteer days,” said Julie Reyburn, Communications Director for the Kids to Love Foundation.
Kids to Love will provide school supplies to more than 4,000 foster children across Alabama and Tennessee. It’s a lot of work carried out by volunteers with hearts as big as the task.
“I wanted to volunteer because I like how I feel being a part of this effort,” said Julia Akers.
“We are very fortunate to live in a generous community,” said Reyburn. “We have overwhelming support.”
Every pencil, notebook and backpack here is intended to erase the worries foster children have about starting a new school year.
“Foster parents and social workers tell us a new backpack is a self-esteem boost for kids,” said Reyburn. “They have what their peers have.”
“I mean, it’s God’s purpose. How can you not be a part of that?” Akers added.
