Google has introduced an upgraded Google Maps app for Android smartphones and tablets – a change that will also be coming soon to iPhone and iPad.
The company announced the improvements on its blog. Key changes to look for? An Explore feature, where you can tap a search box and get cards showing places to eat and drink near you.
There’s also enhanced navigation, which brings you road problems on-the-go and incident details with a single tap. If there’s bad traffic you can also get intelligent re-routing. Google Maps will now “alert you if a better route becomes available and reroute you to your destination faster.” This particular feature is available only on Android to start but eventually coming to iOS.
There’s also a new 5.0 star rating system that gives you a quick read on how your friends and others rate places like restaurants, bars and cafes. According to the Google blog, Zagat will offer up expert opinions, “the Zagat badge of excellence and curated lists are integrated into search results so you can quickly spot the very best places.”
