TSA Now Instagraming Confiscated Guns And More
TSA now posting images of confiscated items
The words “technology” and “savvy” don’t usually come to mind when you think of government agencies but the Transportation Security Administration is embracing both terms with an Instagram account.
Late last month, TSA began posting photos on Instagram of confiscated guns, knives, fireworks and more. Less than a dozen photos have been posted but the TSA account has already attracted more than 40,000 followers.
In one item description, the TSA blog team writes, “Loaded firearm discovered in a carry-on bag in Albuquerque last week.” Another description, alongside an artistic-looking snapshot of a knife reads, “The perfect #knife to bring to a #gunfight was discovered in a carry-on bag at #Cleveland #Hopkins #airport…”
The images appear to have been jazzed up using the filters and photo features Instagram is known for and some of the posts are gathering hundreds of likes and comments.
A TSA spokesman tells CNNMoney the Instagram account is a way to engage with the traveling public. The blog team will respond to comments as well – explaining the kinds of fines, for example, that passengers found with a gun in security could face.
