COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Authorities say they have found the body of a man who drowned in Cane Creek Monday night.
The Alabama Marine Police say the body of 35-year-old Roger Hayes was found around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Cadaver dogs narrowed down the location and crews then used sonar equipment to find his body, about 400 yards from where he went into the water Monday evening.
Hayes, of New Jersey, jumped into the creek in an effort to save his daughter, who had fallen in. The girl was able to grab a limb and pull herself out.
Several agencies participated in the search Tuesday, including the Alabama Marine Police, Cherokee Rescue Squad, Riverton Rose Trail, Colbert County EMA and HEMSI.
Authorities closed the boat ramp at the creek to use it for search operations.
Hayes and his two daughters were visiting from Virginia. He brought the girls to Cane Creek to show them where he grew up.
The man’s other daughter ran to the highway to get help. Tiffany Turner was driving along Highway 72 when she saw the child running between cars, trying to flag someone down.
“She said ‘I need a phone, I need a phone, I need 911′,” said Turner. “I asked ‘what’s going on?’ She was so frantic, I couldn’t make heads or tails at first.”
