DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) - Decatur Police urge people to stay off the roads if possible.  The city is experiencing widespread flooding Thursday afternoon on several streets and low-lying areas.

Please use extreme caution when traveling, and please do not try to drive through standing water.  Police have had to rescue several stranded drivers whose cars got caught in high water.

Due to the high volume of rainwater runoff, police urge parents to closely monitor children in the vicinity of drainage ditches. Please do not let them play in high water -- they can quickly be swept away.

Please do not call 911 to inquire about the status of streets.  Many streets are closed.  Dispatchers must keep the phone lines clear for emergency calls.
